Reproductive Freedom: Herbs for Choice After Conception
May you read this while healthy and engaged in finding the gifts of small, sustainable actions which support you during these winter months.
After weeks (years?) of contemplating how I could pass forward my understanding of holding space for cis-women who have recognized that they have unexpectedly conceived, I feel I may have arrived at a small part of the answer.
Women have walked into my office uncertain of how to proceed in their Life, their family dynamic, their relationship. To grow a child, or not? Is this an unexpected gift from the Universe? Is this a test? Who am I? What are my beliefs?
The first step is listening.
Some women have left my office with Oatstraw or Lady’s Mantle tea and have chosen to continue their pregnancy.
Some women have left my office with a set of instructions, a bottle of tincture and an entirely different tea. We continue to communicate – these women and I. This is a midwifing process.
Sometimes, everything flows smoothly. Sometimes, the experience proceeds with challenges – physical, emotional, and Spiritual. The process is explored with ritual and journaling and other tools. Sometimes other plants call to be a part of the movement. The listening continues.
~~~ The desire to be available for this kind of transformational Life event stems from my own unexpected pregnancy in my late 20s. I felt absolutely distraught when I realized that this “taboo” topic wasn’t discussed during my 3 year clinical herbal program. Nor could either of my women mentors who had been practicing herbalists for over a decade confidently describe to me how to work with herbs during this unanticipated, urgent situation.
It was not so easy to find this kind of information at that time. In a book, zine, or from an herbal practioner.
~~~ I offer my experience of supporting hundreds of women during this vulnerable and (potentially) very empowering time. During this evening, we’ll cover how to: o open space by phone or in person o create a container of safety o listen deeply for emotional, physical, and Spirit needs o recognize the edges of appropriate care with plant medicine o articulate options (herbal and otherwise) of how to move forward o explain how to dose with plant medicine (if appropriate) o hold space until moon flow o provide after-care support
There will be an opportunity for follow-up work for those who wish a deeper, held experience of mentorship and personal growth. This material is deeply impactful, and for some it will be all you need to feel comfortable engaging this sacred container of transformation.
